Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Leading global public health experts and NGO and business leaders will convene for two days in Lexington, Massachusetts to identify innovative solutions for improving the treatment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), which kills more than 150,000 people each year.

The goal of the Innovation Summit, jointly organized by The Lilly MDR-TB Partnership and the Stop TB Partnership, and facilitated by Innosight, is to find solutions for identified barriers to treating the disease.

MDR-TB is a form of tuberculosis that is resistant to the drugs most commonly used to treat the disease. It afflicts more than 500,000 people worldwide with some 80 percent of cases occurring in India, China, Russia, and South Africa.

Due to drug resistance, MDR-TB must be treated with second-line drugs (SLD). Because of a range of challenges, however, fewer than 20,000 patients are treated each year with quality-assured SLD drugs. The summit will use Innosight’s solutions development process to focus on 14 critical SLD supply chain barriers from the viewpoint of different stakeholders.

In attendance will be more than 35 experts from a variety of organizations dedicated to treating and eradicating MDR-TB, including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, Partners in Health, the Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard, USAID, Wal-Mart, IDA Foundation, Eli Lilly and Company, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and others.

Said Tracy Sims, Vice President, Lilly Foundation, “high-quality second-line drugs for MDR-TB exist, but a variety of barriers cripple the supply chain and result in an unacceptably high number of patients who go untreated. In bringing some of the most talented and committed experts in MDR-TB together at this summit, we believe we can make great progress in developing actionable solutions to break down these barriers, improve access to treatment, and save lives.”

Following the summit, participants will seek to identify methods to test and implement the identified solutions.

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, is commenting on a recent study that shows stress can further aggravate cancer.

In a recent medical report published in the journal Public Library of Science (PLoS), the influence of stress and anxiety was shown to increase the number of cancer cells, thus inducing cancer progression.

According to the PLoS report, the continuously high levels of anxiety and stress can offset various cellular activities in the body, which are preventative against cancer cells and can potentially decrease cancer risk. Using cancer-induced mouse models that would represent human subjects with skin cancer or melanoma, these scientists subjected these animals to chronic stress and monitored various cellular and molecular events throughout the experimentation.

Spokesman for Bel Marra Health, Dr. Victor Marchione says, “the results of the study showed that the immune system of the chronic stress-exposed mice with skin cancer was at a lower level, thus allowing these animals to develop additional medical conditions aside from melanoma. It has also been earlier reported that cancer cells generally develop when the immune system of a person is incapable of fighting foreign bodies or pathogens that have entered the bodies through infection.”

The study also showed that the lymph nodes of the mice, or the organs that are responsible for producing antibodies against foreign pathogens, were poorly functioning, as compared to cancer-induced mice that were not subjected to chronic stress. All these observations suggested that cancer risk and progression has increased in the presence of chronic stress.

The medical report contributes helpful information on the control of division in cancer cells, decreasing cancer risk, and identifying an additional preventative measure against cancer.

CEO of Bel Marra Health, Jim Chiang says, “this study is interesting because it shows us that stress and anxiety does not only affect the mental health of an individual, but can also increase the number of cancer cells, resulting in further progression of the disease. With stress and anxiety, the quality of life of a cancer patient can also deteriorate at a higher rate, which is very concerning.”

(SOURCE: “PLoS One “, High-Anxious Individuals Show Increased Chronic Stress Burden, Decreased Protective Immunity, and Increased Cancer Progression in a Mouse Model of Squamous Cell Carcinoma”, April 25, 2012)

UK (PRWEB UK) 12 May 2012

Newcastle upon Tyne: Using official data from Companies House, formations agents Duport.co.uk have uncovered figures that show that Newcastle has experienced its best ever April performance for new start-up companies.

191 new companies were formed in Newcastle in April 2012, this is an 18% increase on the previous record of 162, set in April 2010.

“Newcastle upon Tyne is a prime example of the North-East’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship,” stated Duport.co.uk Managing Director, Peter Valaitis, “it’s no wonder that the city is breaking records.”

But business owners in Newcastle and across the North-East are still concerned about a fragile economy, according to a recent statement from the region’s Shadow Monetary Policy Committee.

The North-East regional Shadow Monetary Policy Committee is a partnership between local business owners, representatives of industry, unions and business organisations, and meets before the Bank of England makes its monthly announcement regarding interest rate policy.

During their May meeting, the committee discussed the effects of a possible interest rate rise on North-East businesses, with 11 of the 12 members in favour of the rate remaining at 0.5%.

“A couple of sectors – oil and gas and the automotive and offshore renewables manufacturing – are performing steadily in the North-East but there is still great concern in most other sectors as the construction sector is really struggling, retail and hospitality has flat levels of activity and the public sector is experiencing contraction,” said Kevin Rowan, regional secretary of the Trades Union Congress.

With reports of established businesses struggling through the double-dip recession, the news that Newcastle has a new boom in company formations is heartening, as it is these new firms that can boost the economy and vitality of the city.

Duport.co.uk is a leading UK company formation agent, operating in the UK for around 15 years. Duport registers around 10,000 new companies each year using its Companies House approved software. The Company Register which is maintained by Companies House contains public information about Limited companies and directors.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

The American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society, today announced that it has elected 48 of its members as Fellows of the Association. The recipients were recognized for their outstanding professional contributions to and leadership in the field of statistical science. The Fellows will receive their certificates at a ceremony on Tuesday evening, July 31, at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings, to be held this year in San Diego, California.

“The 48 individuals honored as 2012 Fellows represent an extraordinary set of accomplishments within the field of statistics,” said Robert N. Rodriguez, ASA president. “Their selection as Fellows signifies that they and their work have earned the admiration of their peers, and I congratulate them on behalf of our association.”

The 2012 Fellows are from 18 states and six countries. A list of the Fellows by state/country, along with the citation for each, follows this release.

The designation of Fellow has been a superlative honor in ASA for nearly 100 years. According to the association by-laws, each year the Committee on Fellows can elect no more than one-third of one percent of the total ASA membership as Fellows. Individuals are nominated for the honor by fellow members and, to be selected, must have an established reputation and made outstanding contributions in some aspect of statistical work.

The Committee on Fellows evaluates candidates’ contributions to the advancement of statistics, giving due weight to publications, the positions held by the candidates in the organizations in which they are employed, activities within the association, membership and accomplishments in other societies, and other professional activities.

About the American Statistical Association

The American Statistical Association (ASA), a scientific and educational society founded in Boston in 1839, is the second oldest continuously operating professional society in the United States.

Melville, New York (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Attorneys Andres Alonso and David Krangle, founding partners of Alonso Krangle LLP, a national law firm focused on child safety and child product liability injuries, are today calling for the renewal of legislation to increase pediatric clinical trials and require that child safety information be added to the labels of prescription drugs likely to be used to treat children. According to U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) researchers, a study of over 500 medication labels from 2009 revealed that half lacked information regarding their use in children, including instruction on proper pediatric dosage. The study appears in the May issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). [abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/05/08/how-do-docs-prescribe-kids-meds-guess/]

Alonso Krangle LLP is offering free lawsuit consultations to families of children injured by defective drugs, or children injured by unsafe products, dangerous toys, and defective medical devices. To discuss a potential lawsuit with one of the experienced and compassionate child safety lawyers at Alonso Krangle LLP, please contact us at 1-800-403-6191 or visit our website, FightForVictims.com.

The authors of the JAMA study said they conducted their analysis to gauge the effectiveness of legislation passed in the last decade to increase pediatric clinical trials and child safety information on drug labels. The Pediatric Research Equity Act allows the FDA to require drug companies conduct pediatric clinical trials if a drug is likely to be used widely in pediatrics. The Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act gives incentives for drug companies to test their products on children. According to the FDA researchers, these laws have resulted in new pediatric labeling for almost 400 drugs as of March 2011. However, the current legislation is set to expire this year.

The JAMA study looked at 560 medications and found that only 231 included information regarding the drug’s safety and effectiveness in children and teens, including age-specific dosage information. Another 29 had dosing information for at least some younger age groups, but not all.

The remainder – 54 percent – lacked any useful pediatric information. Even after the research team took 100 medications that weren’t relevant for use in children out of the equation, 44 percent still had no child-relevant labeling. What’s more, over half of drugs with new ingredients approved between 2002 and 2008 lacked specific information for safety and dosing in children.

According to Alonso Krangle, LLP, a lack of clear child safety information, including proper dosage instructions, on prescription drug labels poses a serious public health threat. In April, Harvard researchers reported that four out of every five children hospitalized in the U.S. are treated with drugs that have never been tested in children and are FDA-approved only for adults. For this reason, the firm is calling on the U.S. Congress to reauthorize both the Pediatric Research Equity Act and Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act as soon as possible, preferably before this important legislation expires later this year.

Alonso Krangle LLP is committed to protecting the legal rights of children who have been injured by unsafe products, especially dangerous drugs and defective medical devices. If your child sustained a serious injury from a medication, medical device or other defective product, your family may be able to file a lawsuit seeking compensation from the manufacturer, supplier and others who brought the dangerous item to market.
Denver, CO (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Aventura today announced that it will demonstrate its rules-based clinical workflow solution at the Citrix Synergy 2012 Conference in San Francisco May 9-11 using Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp. In today’s virtual hospital environment, Windows roams with the clinician but does not update the static persistent session as the clinician physically moves throughout the building. The Aventura solution leverages the virtualized environment by dynamically applying rules that populate the roaming workstation with the correct patient data and applications based on the clinician location. Aventura integrates patent-pending context-, location-, and printer aware technology with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop to map the roaming desktop to the clinician workflow. With Aventura, doctors and nurses have instant access to the information and tools they need, when they need it, from any workstation in the hospital.

New technology mandates require doctors and nurses to access computer information dozens of times a day. Computer sharing and long logon processes make it difficult to access the right information at the right time to drive critical care decisions. As a leader in using context- and location-aware computing in healthcare, Aventura uses rules-based computing to present patient information intelligently to the clinician based on location and credentials. Aventura uses the same technology to locate and re-assign the closest online printer as the default, saving the clinician from having to locate a printed document. Aventura’s clinician workflow solution gives clinicians desktop access to whatever information they need at the point of care in seconds rather than minutes.

“We are excited to expand our Citrix XenApp virtualization support to now include Citrix XenDesktop,” said Karyn German, Vice President Product Management at Aventura. “By leveraging the Citrix virtualization solutions with our own context- and location-aware technology, we can improve the way virtualization supports the roaming desktop. We give clinicians near-instant access to patient-relevant data and reduce the risk of medical errors. We also boost clinician satisfaction as frustration about hard-to-access data drops.”

Hospital IT professionals can experience the Aventura rules-based clinical workflow solution in booth #507 at the Citrix Synergy 2012 Conference or they can schedule a personal demonstration by contacting Greta Oberschmidt at greta(dot)oberschmidt(at)aventurahq(dot)com.

About Aventura:

Aventura improves the workflow of doctors and nurses by providing the information they need, when and where they need it. Aventura’s context and location aware computing intelligence orchestrates technologies already in place, making them responsive to the user. Aventura provides tools that help clinicians practice more productively and effectively, allowing them to spend more time with patients. Aventura improves clinician satisfaction, increases EMR use at the point of care, and allows focus on the quality of care. Learn more at http://www.aventurahq.com.
